What are the consequences of an imperfect market for healthcare?

Discussion Question 1

While healthcare is sometimes considered a consumer good, acquiring
healthcare is not the same as purchasing other consumer goods, for example,
buying a car. Market forces or conditions for health care are simply not
comparable. Shi and Singh use the term an imperfect market. Why is
the U.S. health care market considered an imperfect market? What are the
consequences of an imperfect market for healthcare?

Discussion Question 2

Because the U.S. has a multi-payer healthcare system, administrative costs
are higher in the U.S. than other countries. Compare the U.S. multi-payer with
other countries systems in terms of cost-containment. Are there any other that
you believe would be acceptable/politically feasible to the U.S. public and
interest groups?

Discussion Question 3

Given the readings and lectures on the determinants of
health, and the need to emphasis health care services to address the various
determinants of health, what is, or what should be, the future of acute care
hospitals?
