The analysis paper is a 4-page write-up. Students will use two theoretical perspectives of their choice from those covered in this course to analyze a current world issue. This could include the current nuclear predicament with North Korea or Iran, the crisis in the Gaza Strip, Russia’s presence in Eastern Ukraine or the Indo-Pakistani conflict. Students need to upload a proposal that includes the perspective issue to the instructor by the end of Week 8. I reserve the right to decline the topic and make suggestions based on the expressed interest.

TOPIC: THE NEED FOR COEXISTENCE OR DENUCLEARIZATION: THE DILEMMA OF NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR ISSUE

Background of topic

Following a meeting by high-ranking government officials in North Korea in January 2018, reports by the North Korean government spokesman indicated that the country through its leadership is dedicated to developing and using nuclear weapons against the United States. Before the meeting between US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the two counties were involved in aggressive attacks with the United States promising equal retaliatory attacks against North Korea should its leadership proceed with the planned development and deployment of nuclear weapons. In case of a total war between the united states and North Korea, it is possible that the battle will be to not only affirm its position as the hegemon of international affairs in the case of the United States, it will also be an approach towards establishing its position as a powerful force in the Asian continent.[1]It is likely that the war will attract allies considering that South Korea, which has been threatened by the development of nuclear weapons by North Korea, will probably join the war as an ally of the United States. It is also possible that China, a historical supporter of North Korea will also join the war against the United States. An assessment of the possible threat indicates that the North Koreans will subject the United States military bases in neighboring countries such as Japan to attacks. This phenomenon will increase the possibility that Japan will be dragged into the war. The inherent dilemma of a full-scale nuclear war instigated by North Korea will most likely drag the northern Asian nations and the United States into war. The possible use of nuclear weapons implies that the damage will be devastating to the human population on a global scale.

Theoretical framework

Constructivism and realism will provide an effective platform for analyzing and understanding the dilemma that defines the North Korea nuclear issues. When perceived from a realist perspective, it is evident that the nuclear issue in North Korea arises from the desire to institute safety measures in a global system that is often in a potential state of war. Realism will provide an effective understanding of the nuclear battle between North Korean and the international community in relation to the concept of balance of power, self-help, and survival. For the United States. the dilemma in the North Korea issue provides an opportunity to maintain dominance in Asia.

Constructivism will provide a platform for explaining aspects about the nuclear issue that cannot be understood from a realist perspective. This is because constructivists focus on the perception of physical forces. The implication is that whenever a state reacts or develops policies targeting a situation, other factors necessitate such actions. This assumption arises from the understanding that issues of international politics cannot only be understood through material aspects such as the need to attain military power. Instead, there is need to assess the contribution of immaterial issues such as culture and identity which are critical in defining the manner in which different actors perceive one another and the issues that inspire them to action. According to constructivism, when analyzing interstate action from the perspective of international affairs, it is important to not only embrace the power of logic but also issues of perception.
