A few key concepts will be important in this assignment. Economic geographers and others call the paths traced by a given commodity ‘commodity chains’. There are other terms for essentially the same idea—for example, corporate buyers like the large retailers are more likely to call them ‘supply chains’. Commodity chains and supply chains are often complex and
obscure. The degree to which we can actually trace the geographical paths of an item, the various materials that went into making it, and the conditions under it was produced, is called “traceability.”
