Hello, and welcome to your Eggers paper! This assignment draws upon your ability to read critically, recognize what is most important within a passage of text, cite meaningfully and accurately, determine the most effective way to employ your cited material (summary, paraphrase, direct quote), develop analysis, and present and support your thesis.
REQUIREMENTS: Your paper needs to be typed, three to four pages in length, double-spaced, twelve point (Times New Roman) font, standard heading and margins, and should correctly employ both MLA style, parenthetical, in-text citation, as well as a Works Cited page. Be sure to use your handbook, Writing Center tutors, and the Writing Center (CLRC) web page for correct usage/format information. As always, proofread, spellcheck, and seek timely tutorial assistance (seeing a tutor an hour or less before the paper is due does not allow you adequate time to make appropriate and meaningful revisions). Make sure as well to have an original (and possibly creative!) title. Also, you must inform your analysis with appropriate terms and concepts from class! Connect analysis to themes!
THE PROMPT: Analyze the dialogue between Dave and Toph on pages 114-120, Part IV, in Dave Eggers’ A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS/CONSIDERATIONS/ADVICE: Location, location, location. The entirety of your analysis needs to reside within the six pages of dialogue between Dave and Toph in part IV. As the audience for your paper has an intimate understanding of the book, you do not need to overcontextualize events outside of those six pages. And within the six pages the dialogue and assignment inhabit, you will not be able to cite every word of every line. You will need to be selective and choose the most important pieces of evidence to use in your paper to back up your assertions/argument.
BUT WHAT’S MY THESIS? Yes, the thesis: the most important grounding statement regarding what your paper will attempt to prove. The best way to arrive at a thesis is by asking questions, problematizing, so let’s give the elephant in the room some water and nuts. Reading the six page exchange between Dave and Toph, beginning on page 114 of A Heartbreaking Work…, leaves us with a few prominent questions, to say the least. How can a little boy use such language? Is Toph a super genius? How does he know what he knows? Well, to clear the air, and avoid potential reductionary and malodorous analysis, it is important to recognize that the dialogue within those six pages is not between Dave and Toph. And if it is not between Dave and Toph, what is going on and why? What does the substance of the (internal) dialogue reveal? What is Dave showing us? Ah hah! This line of questioning should lead you to a thesis that you will support with specific and strategic reference to the text located within those six pages of part IV (and remember that you are not using evidence to prove it is not Toph; that has already been established!). Wallow. Problematize. The rest is up to you. Thanks!
