Write a brief explanation of three factors that might contribute to burnout in school counseling. Then, explain the importance of self-care for school counselors. Finally, explain two strategies that you might use to promote self-care and prevent burnout.
Consider burnout factors and stressful issues you might encounter as a school counselor. Then, you explore self-care strategies you might use to help maintain personal and professional wellness.
Working with students, especially students with special needs and their families, while intrinsically rewarding, is difficult work. For example, counseling sessions are often filled with intense student stories, legal issues, ethical dilemmas, and emotions that can be stressful for you. Neglecting stress and self-care could have negative effects on your body, mind, and spirit, leaving you worn out and out of balance.
It is necessary to maintain personal and professional wellness. An effective school counselor develops a balance between giving of self and giving to self. Remember that professional wellness or self-care is not a luxury, but an ethical mandate. The American School Counselor Association’s ethical stipulation E.1.c. mandates that professional school counselors “. . . refrain from activity that may lead to inadequate professional services or diminish their effectiveness. . . .” (ASCA, 2010, E.1.c.).
